If you are a new postgraduate entrant to GSA and have been given a Conditional or Unconditional offer of study you are eligible to apply to our scholarship programme for 2022/23.

If eligible, you can apply for a maximum of two scholarships. Only one application form is required to apply for two scholarships. The application form can be downloaded here. Your application responses must be typed. Please e-mail scholarships@gsa.ac.uk if you require the application form in an alternative format.

The deadline for submitting a scholarship application is Wednesday 31 May 2023 at 4pm.

Mackintosh School of Architecture – Postgraduate Scholarships

NOTE: Diploma of Architecture applicants are only eligible for Undergraduate Scholarships and the Governors International 24 month PG Scholarship.

Grace and Clark Fyfe Master of Architecture Scholarship

Grace and Clark Fyfe met when they studied Architecture at The Glasgow School of Art in the 1930s. Clark worked in London and then became the County Architect in Ayrshire until his retirement. Both he and Grace maintained an interest in the GSA throughout their lives.  Grace and Clark willed their entire estate to the Mackintosh School of Architecture to be used for scholarships. The gallery on the ground floor of the Bourdon Building is named the Grace & Clark Fyfe Gallery in honour of their generosity and the first Grace & Clark Fyfe Scholarships were offered in 2007.

Leverhulme Master of Fine Art Bursary

Leverhulme Logo

The Leverhulme Trust was formed on the death of Lord Leverhulme who made his fortune through Lever Brothers. This company later became Unilever which still operates today, making a variety of basic consumer goods. From the earliest days, Lord Leverhulme was also a philanthropist, supporting a variety of educational, religious, civic, community, and medical causes. His achievements were recognised in 1922 when the title Lord Leverhulme of the Western Isles was conferred upon him. Today, the Trust makes awards for the support of research and education, and one area of interest is fine and performing arts. They have been supporting GSA in various ways since 2005.

Additional eligibility requirements: Awarded based on artistic excellence and financial need.  Recipients will be required to submit a report on their activities and achievements for the year to the Leverhulme Trust.

The Ranald & Jennifer May Postgraduate Painting Scholarship

The Ranald & Jennifer May Trust has been set up recently as a legacy for the advancement of education, the arts, heritage and science.  The Trustees are keen to benefit students who attend GSA and other institutions.  Jennifer May was fond of GSA and left a legacy when she died in 2015.  The Trustees set this scholarship up as they wanted to award a student who shows potential of performing well and Mrs May in particular was interested in portrait painting.

Value of the scholarship: £10,000

Duration of the scholarship: 1 or 2 years depending on length of course. Recipients on a two year programme will receive £5,000 per year. For the scholarship to continue to year 2, students must have satisfactorily completed year 1.

Subject eligibility: Open to Postgraduate painting students (including MFA where the applicant specialises in painting)

Additional eligibility requirements: Awarded on the basis of the strength of a scholarship application and course portfolio, as previously submitted to the School of Fine Art.

Mackendrick Postgraduate Scholarship

James Mackendrick was an artist from Ayrshire who attended the GSA from 1938 to 1942 studying Fine Art. Over fifty years after graduating, he decided to bequest his entire estate to the GSA for annual student awards as a result of the GSA’s contribution to his personal and professional life. The first Mackendrick scholarship was offered in 2000.

Duration of the scholarship: 1 or 2 years depending on length of course. Recipients on a two year programme will receive £2,500 per year. For the scholarship to continue to year 2, students must have satisfactorily completed year 1.

The Baird Bursary

The Baird Educational Trust is a Charitable Trust set up by James (Jim) W Baird in 2002. Jim was originally from Glasgow where, as a boy, he attended piano lessons at the junior school of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music & Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). After leaving school, he studied law at Glasgow University and went on to qualify as a solicitor, latterly working in Hong Kong. Sadly, Jim died in 2020 but the work of the Trust continues under the stewardship of the current Trustees - The purpose of The Baird Educational Trust is to provide financial assistance and support to any person undertaking a course of tuition, education or training in any branch of the performing, visual or literary art.

The Niamh Forbes Postgraduate Fine Art Scholarship

Niamh Forbes was an artist from Dublin who graduated from the GSA MLitt Fine Art Practice programme (Sculpture Pathway) with Distinction in 2017.  She greatly enjoyed and benefitted from her time at GSA, developing her critical thinking and artistic practice and making many friends among the students and staff.  Following her untimely passing in 2018, Niamh’s family have made this scholarship available to assist other students wishing to undertake Fine Art studies at postgraduate level at GSA.

The Rosemary Lucas Postgraduate Scholarship - Interior Design (International)

Rosemary is a Scot and an alumna of GSA.  She graduated from Interior Design in 1967 and set-up her own Interior Design company, firstly in Sydney and currently in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia.  She has managed projects in residential, heritage, office, hospitality and healthcare spheres.

Value of the scholarship: £22,680 towards tuition fees and £12,180 stipend

Duration of the scholarship: 1 year

Subject eligibility: MDes Interior Design students only

Domicile eligibility: Full International fee paying students only

Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

Additional eligibility requirements: This scholarship will be offered to a candidate showing strong folio content and an excellent potential research proposal – as demonstrated on your GSA postgraduate admissions application form and portfolio submission.  The Interior Design Masters programme places emphasis on the adaptive reuse of buildings, it also elevates a critical appraisal of how digital technologies impact on the spaces we inhabit.  With this in mind proposals are sought which offer to contextualize these particular emphases, and submissions with particular focus on matters such as sustainability in design; environmental place-making and materiality in times of environmental stress will be looked on favourably.

The John Hamilton Scholarship

Penguin has created a new scholarship at The Glasgow School of Art, named in honour of its long-time Art Director John Hamilton, who died in 2019.

The John Hamilton Scholarship offers £3,000 to one student per year, to support them for one year of study, as well as a paid internship in the art department at Penguin Random House UK. It is open to UK and EU postgraduate students living in Scotland and studying for a Master of Design in Graphics/Illustration/ Photography or a Master of Design in Communication Design at The Glasgow School of Art.

Born in Glasgow, John Hamilton studied illustration at The Glasgow School of Art between 1982 and 1986, and his degree show consisted of a series of covers for imaginary books. After joining publisher William Heinemann shortly after graduating, he moved to Penguin in 1997 as Art Director for Penguin General Adult Publishing – later also becoming the Art Director for another of the Penguin publishing houses, Michael Joseph. During his twenty-two years with the company, he worked with many of Penguin’s bestselling authors, including Jamie Oliver, Zadie Smith, Nick Hornby and William Boyd.

Domicile eligibility: The award is open to all UK/EU candidates who have been resident in Scotland for more than 12 months prior to application.

Additional eligibility requirements: Awarded based on academic excellence and priority will be given to those who can demonstrate financial need.

* The Penguin Scholarship recipient will be offered an internship at Penguin’s London offices. The timing is to be agreed between the student, their supervisor at the GSA and Penguin.  The internship will be offered at Penguin’s discretion and it reserves the right to withdraw the internship as necessary.

Austin Merrills Postgraduate Scholarship

Austin Merrills was Vice Chair of the Board of Governors at GSA until 1997; shortly before his death. Austin was also the Chairman of Ireland Alloys which, after his death, made a donation to GSA.  Austin was interested in digital media/virtual reality and the scholarship has been designated a School of Simulation and Visualisation specialist award.

Every year the Board of Governors of The Glasgow School of Art selects postgraduate applicants who require financial support and awards them a £2,000 tuition fees discount.

Tetsuya Mukai Postgraduate Scholarship

In April 1998 GSA loaned forty works of art from its Archives and Collections to the Hida Takayama Museum of Art in Takayama, Japan for a Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibition. Mr Mukai, Director of the museum provided GSA with an endowment to establish this scholarship, to assist Japanese students to undertake study at GSA and to further mutual understanding and cultural development between the two countries.

Domicile eligibility: Open to Japanese residents (i.e. those paying full international fees) to undertake taught or research postgraduate study at the GSA.

Sir Harry Barnes Postgraduate Scholarship

Sir Harry Barnes started his career at GSA in 1944 as Assistant Master in Painting & Drawing. He became Deputy Director and Registrar in 1946 and was appointed Director of the School in 1964. Major achievements included setting up the Mackintosh School of Architecture in 1965 in collaboration with Sir Charles Wilson at the University of Glasgow, overseeing the building of the Foulis building and Newbery Tower (both now demolished to make way for the Reid building) and laying the foundations of the Bourdon building. He retired in 1980, and a scholarship fund was established in his name. Donations made to this fund have enabled this scholarship to be offered annually since the early 1980s. Sadly, Sir Harry Barnes died in 1982 and his wife, Lady Barnes died in 2010.
